Exploring English through Music - Studio3 School of English

Listening to music in English can be a great fun and interactive way to learn English and integrate English into your life. Depending on what genre of music you like, I can recommend some artists that you might want to try out. I recommend reading the lyrics while listening to the music, to enhance your understanding of the songs. This is not only a good way to improve your English, but it also allows you to gain a deeper understanding of American culture.

POP

If you are a fan of pop (popular) music, I am sure that you have heard of Beyonce, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift. If not, you must give them a listen! Other famous pop artists to listen to include Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter, two American singers who have quickly become some of the most listened-to artists in the US.

JAZZ

If you are a fan of jazz music, some of the most famous jazz musicians include Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone. These artists are a good starting point for exploring jazz music, since they have created some of the most famous jazz songs of all time such as Fly Me to the Moon, Dream a Little Dream of Me, and My Baby Just Cares for Me, to name a few.

R&B

Lastly, if you are into more chill music, focused on beautiful singing voices and instrumentals you might want to listen to some Rhythm &Blues (R&B). Famous R&B artists and their most popular songs include Marvin Gaye (I Heard it Through the Grape Vine), Erykah Badu (On &On), Whitney Houston (I Will Always Love You), and Stevie Wonder (Signed, Sealed, Delivered).

Even if you do not usually listen to any of these genres, listening to these artists and these songs, who are some of the most famous of all time, will definitely help deepen your understanding of American culture.
