La mayoría de personas aceptan que escuchar es la parte más difícil de una lengua, sin embargo es la parte más importante porque lo necesitas para responder a las preguntas, y yo misma sé que ¡es un poco embarazoso pedir a las personas que repitan las cosas diez veces! Es esencial escuchar el nuevo idioma continuamente, y por eso, los programas de televisión funcionan de una forma genial para practicar inglés sin aburrirse.
Aquí encontrarás una lista de algunas de las series más populares en los Estados Unidos y en Inglaterra, que te pueden ayudar a escuchar inglés, con o sin subtítulos. Recomiendo que veas estos programas con subtítulos de inglés, para que puedas relacionar las palabras que escuches con las palabras escritas en la pantalla.
- Orange is the New Black
Esta serie estadounidense trata de la vida de la protagonista, Piper Chapman, y su experiencia como prisionera en una cárcel de mujeres. Está basada en el libro por Piper Kerman, Orange is the New Black: Crónica de mi año en una prisión federal de mujeres, y está llena de drama y humor negro. La serie ya tiene 5 temporadas y hay muchos caracteres con historias diferentes, y hay algunas actrices hispanas que hablan español durante la serie, así que ¡puedes relajarte un poco! Es un programa muy interesante para aprender un poco más sobre la violencia y la política dentro de una cárcel, aunque que claro que está un poco dramatizado como todas las series. Orange is the New Black está en Netflix, y es muy similar a la series española Vis a Vis que actualmente está en Channel 4 con Walter Presents.
- Friends
Friends es, en mi opinión, la mejor sitcom de todas. La trama consiste en seguir a un grupo de seis amigos veinteañeros en Nueva York en los éxitos y los fracasos en sus empleos y sus vidas privadas también. Es muy fácil de entender y no tienes que ver los episodios en orden ni concentrarte mucho en lo que pasa, que es la belleza de este programa. Es una serie muy graciosa y atemporal porque todo el mundo puede identificarse con sus situaciones, y con 10 temporadas y 236 episodios definitivamente vas a disfrutarlo. Está ahora en Netflix, listo para ver.
- The Simpsons
Una serie clásica, claro que ya se ha traducido The Simpsons en una multitud de lenguas, español incluido. Es una oportunidad perfecta ver los episodios otra vez en inglés para que puedas comparar las frases y verificar si lo entiendes sin problema. Hay una amplia gama de sitios web donde tienes acceso a todas las desventuras tontas de Homero (“Homer” en inglés), como Youtube, por ejemplo.
- Spongebob Squarepants
Otro dibujo animado, el original Bob Esponja es buena práctica para los jóvenes, con lenguaje un poco más sencillo y una trama muy fácil de seguir. Este programa es ideal para aquellos que solo tengan 10 o 15 minutos para parar y ver un episodio, y también te da la posibilidad de verlo otra vez si inicialmente no lo entiendes. No tengas vergüenza de practicar tu destreza escuchando Spongebob Squarepants, yo sé de experiencia propia que funciona muy bien y está disponible en Youtube con subtítulos de inglés.
- Sherlock
Sherlock es un drama británico, y se trata de las aventuras del genio detective Sherlock Holmes (actuado por Benedict Cumberbatch) y su compañero, el doctor John Watson, en sus esfuerzos para resolver delitos en varios lugares del Reino Unido. Este programa es muy popular en Inglaterra, y es ideal si prefieres practicar el acento británico en lugar del acento estadounidense. Está basado en las novelas de Sherlock Holmes por Arthur Conan Doyle, y el desarrollo del programa contiene mucha tensión y sorpresas. Puedes ver la serie en Antena 3 o en Netflix.
- Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones es un drama de fantasía muy popular en el Reino Unido y los Estados Unidos en este momento. Es una adaptación de las novelas de George R. R. Martin, que se llaman A Song of Ice and Fire, y básicamente trata de familias dinásticas en un mundo ficcional que luchan para conseguir el Trono de Hierro, y contiene magia y dragones. Aunque es bastante violento y contiene temas no apropiados para jóvenes, como la violencia sexual, para los adultos es una serie muy buena si quieres ver la lucha entre bueno y malo, con escenas con gráficos fantásticos y una trama muy complexa. Este programa es un poco más difícil de encontrar en línea, pero es posible buscarlo en Youtube y otros sitios web.
TV shows that can help you to learn English
Learning a new language is a very difficult skill, especially when you don’t have a lot of free time to practice it every day. For a lot of people, there’s a huge difference between learning English in a classroom to being able to have a conversation with someone in England and understand everything they say. Most people would say that listening is the hardest part of learning a language, however it’s also the most important part because you need it to respond to questions, and even I know that it’s embarrassing to have to ask people to repeat themselves ten times just to understand them! It’s essential to be constantly listening to that new language, which is why watching telelvision programs is a great way of practicing your English without getting bored.
Below is a list of some of the popular TV series in the US and the UK that can help you listen to English, with or without subtitles. I recommend that you watch these programs with English subtitles, so you can easily compare the words that you hear with the words on the screen.
- Orange is the New Black
This American series deals with the life of the main character, Piper Chapman, and her experience of being a prisoner in a women’s jail. It’s very easy to understand and you don’t have to watch the episodes in order, nor concentrate too much on what’s going on, which is the beauty of this series. It’s a very funny program, and it’s considered to be timeless because everyone can relate to their struggles, and with 10 seasons and 236 episodes, you are sure to enjoy at least one of them. It is now on Netflix, ready to watch.

Another cartoon show, the original “Bob Esponja” is great practice for kids and teenagers, with simpler language and very easy plots to follow. This program is ideal for those who only have 10 or 15 minutes to spare to watch an episode, and that also gives you the opportunity to re-watch it if you didn’t quite understand it the first time. Don’t be ashamed of improving your listening skills by watching Spongebob Squarepants, I know from experience that it works really well and it’s readily available on Youtube with English subititles.

Sherlock is a British drama, and it deals with the adventures of the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and his sidekick, Doctor John Watson, in their efforts to solve crimes in various locations all over the UK. This show is very popular in England, and it’s the ideal program for you if you’d prefer to practice the British accent instead of the American one. The program is based on the Sherlock Holmes novels written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and the development of the storylines always involves a lot of tension and surprises. You can access the series through Antena 3 or Netflix as well.

Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama that’s very popular in both the US and the UK at the moment. It is an adaptation of the novel by George R. R. Martin, called A Song of Ice and Fire, and it is, put simply, about dynastic families in a fictional world who are fighting for the Iron Throne, and it involves magic and dragons. Although it is quite violent and it deals with topics that aren’t appropriate for younger people, such as sexual violence, for adults it is a great series if you like watching shows about the fight between good and evil with amazing graphics and a very complex plot. This program is a bit harder to find online, but it is possible to find it on Youtube and other websites.
